Corrosion behavior of austenitic stainless steels AISI 316 L, 316, 304, 304 L, 321 and 347 in boiling nitric acid (65%) has been studied after stabilizing heat treatment at 885 C; results have shown that treatment improves corrosion resistance of 316 L, 304 L, 321 and 347; while improvement of 316 L is due to presence of ferrite which transforms to sigma phase, that of 321 and 347 steels is due to precipitation of carbides of titanium and columbium, with subsequent impoverishing of these elements in matrix.
