Single bridge piers built in cellular cofferdams
Four-lane Belle Vernon highway bridge across Monongahela river, southeast of Pittsburgh, Pa, is supported on 11 piers and two abutments; illustrated description of cellular cofferdams which were chosen for two main river piers because of 50-ft depth from pool stage to rock; although more expensive than common cofferdams, technical advantages justified construction of cellular cofferdam. (see also anonymous article in Engineer v 191 n 4965 Mar 23 1951 p 392-3)
