Deep, lightweight piers for bridge at Yorktown, Va, built by Caisson method
3750-ft long George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge has seven river spans of from 250 to 390 ft and 14 shore spans of 1210 ft total length; two 500-ft swing spans permit largest warships to pass; tallest pier is 210 ft high; this height is made up of 110-ft caisson on which 100-ft concrete shaft is built; all welded steel caissons are floated to site and sunk by adding successive lifts to concrete walls.
