Roof built first, columns later
To provide 160,200 sq ft of column-free exhibit area for Convention Center in Denver, Colo, space-truss roof structure was selected which is supported by massive concrete columns at sides of building; 14-ft 8 in. deep truss is assembled in four sections on main exhibit floor; truss members are double angles; each truss section, measuring 170×240 ft will be supported by 5×5 ft concrete columns; each space truss section will be lifted and suspended three times before it is completed; first lift will raise it 15 ft so that first stage of pyramid column truss can be built; next lift will raise it another 15 ft for completion of column truss; last lift will raise it to full height so concrete columns can be cast under column trusses.
