Madison square garden fabrication and erection of cable-supported roof
Thirteen-story complex is drum-shaped building with 48 columns around circumference; compression ring is 404 ft diam, topped by cable-suspended roof; ring was shop fabricated in 48 sections, erected onto supporting perimeter columns in field and connected with high-strength bolts; 41 ft diam tension ring was fabricated in quadrants, then erected on temporary scaffolding at job site and welded together; erection of 48, 3 3/4-in. cables was carried out in planned sequence to minimize stresses on partially erected structure; two-story steel structure built above roof cables is entirely supported by roof cables and houses complex lighting system, mechanical equipment and cooling tower.
