Fabrication and erection of cable suspended roof for Madison square sports arena

Arena is drum shaped building topped by cable suspended roof; building circumference contains 48 columns supporting 404 ft diam compression ring from which is suspended first permanent cable supported roof in New York City; it was decided to fabricate ring in 48 sections each of which consisted of straight section approximately 21 ft long plus keystone section approximately 5 ft long; manufacture of cable and procedures for installation; five cables were erected on each side opposite one another; sequence was then shifted approximately 45° and pattern of 14 cables were erected on each side; five open spaces were then filled in on each side to complete cable erection.
