Purpose of review is to outline scope of rock mechanics and to indicate applications of methods of theoretical and applied mechanics to rock mechanics problems; topics reviewed include mechanical properties of rock, in situ stresses, rock fracture, elasticity and plasticity of rock formations and their time-dependent behavior, and applications of rock mechanics in geology, petroleum engineering, and civil and mining engineering.
