Laboratory freezing and thawing tests -- Method of evaluating aggregates
Effects of aggregate on freezing and thawing durability of concrete and methods of specifying aggregate quality are discussed; concretes were made with 56 different coarse aggregates and exposed to ASTM C 291 rapid freezing in air and thawing in water; resistance to freezing and thawing was not significantly correlated with results of Los Angeles abrasion or soundness tests; moisture conditioning of aggregate prior to incorporation in concrete and of concrete prior to exposure to freezing and thawing are shown to be of fundamental importance.
