A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Llyn Celyn project with capacity of 17,800 mgd provides regulating storage for River Dee, and permits abstraction of 64 mgd by Liverpool Corp from river near Chester; it is formed by earth dam which incorporates rolled-clay core and rip-rap wave protection; draw-off tower has main inlets at five levels, each controlled by air-locked siphon in place of normal mechanical valve, and all water passing through tower can be led through power plant; auxiliary works include bellmouth spillway, fish-trap and catch-water bringing in further 2430 acres of catchment; unusual construction techniques were employed in cutoff and core of dam.
