Engineering works at Tilbury docks, 1963-67
First stages of major dock extension works which are being carried out at Tilbury; two deep-water berths, including monolith quay works, novel type of transit shed with 200 ft wide mono-pitch roof, and auxiliary works; two roll-on, roll-off berths in jetty construction on opposite side of new dock, and 189-ft single-span welded steel-framed transit shed are described; stages II and III of branch dock are also covered, and reference is made to reclamation work, dredging and provision of roads and services; new impounding station is detailed and special features to reduce intake of silt as well as construction problems in difficult ground are described; planning, design and construction aspects are discussed.
