With view to eliminating surface defects in top poured ingots, study was made at Cherepovets works of physical and chemical processes occurring during formation of outer surface of ingot; use of synthetic low melting point finely ground slags added to ingot molds when top pouring low carbon steel, eliminates entrapped scum and reduces amount of defects in ingots without adversely affecting metal quality.
