Failure of side-hill highway fill
Discussion of Tennessee roadway failure found to be caused by sliding of fill on water-saturated plastic clay overburden, by small fault which enabled surface water to penetrate deeply, and by use of limy shale blocks from excavation to build up fill; 2 alternative remedies suggested are removal of rock fill and plastic clay overburden and rebuilding of fill with good rock, and construction of bridge across unstable area.
