Expanding industry's waste product tested for highways
Experiments of use of taconite tailings as aggregate in bituminous mixes for highway paving, by Minnesota Dept of Highways; waste product from iron mining was used in bituminous mix for test section of highway along north shore of Lake Superior; tests showed that material provides durability and economy in hot-mix pavements; presence of taconite tailings instead of gravel in bituminous mixture causes no adverse difference in quality.
