Bevy of new ideas paces precast bridge construction
New techniques for producing and assemblying hollow concrete pilcs and other precast elements with production-line speed used in building bridge across San Francisco Bay; slipforming process to turn out 1-piece piles up to 90 ft long at rate of more than 100 units/wk; use of driving ferrule, or compression skirt, that permits fast driving necessary to install piles; method and equipment developed for cutting off pile lengths.
