Bearing walls in Iowa
Massive, 6-story office building for Am Republic Insurance Co in Des Moines, Iowa, features 2 great structural walls of poured-in-place concrete, each resting on 4 "pin-point" steel hinges, holding precast, prestressed T beams which clear-span 90 ft on each floor; freestanding ground floor slides under main mass absorbing 10-ft drop across site; walls, laced with horizontal reinforcing rods, act as girders between hinged point supports; middle panel is hung between end sections with overlapping slip joints; structure is stabilized by central core and by longitudinal stiffening beams running across T sections; walls taper as they rise and as floor loads diminish.
