Concrete caissons designed to carry 120 tons each are being put down for 15 story apartment house foundation in New York City; caissons have enlarged base and are made of concrete compressed and forced into soil by heavy ram; they form, in effect, what might be called pressure injected spread footings; machine that installs caissons is like piledriver in that it carries set of leads and heavy ram that acts as drop hammer.
