Action of sodium chloride solutions on the ferrous metals
Cast-iron and steel plates were immersed 50 mm. below surface of either aerated or non-aerated 2-per cent sodium-chloride solutions, and, at end of each period of 12 or 14 hours, were removed from liquid, washed, dried, rubbed, weighed, and then replaced; results show that both steel and cast iron lose regularly in weight in non-aerated solution; in aerated solution, action on steel corresponds with regular loss in weight; with cast iron, action is more complex.
