Three examples of pile corrosion mechanisms shown are isolated steel pile in aerated, air-free soil, galvanic system between steel pile and underground network, and 2 piles in stray current gradient; corrosion studies to determine site and structure design conditions which will affect corrosion and to measure piling's state of " well being"; study techniques described are illustrated on 4 substructures, namely Harlem River Driveway, Newark Airport hangar, 52-story Prudential Tower in Boston and chemical plant foundation.
