Damaged piles found safe -- Points prevent damage
Tests conducted on 8 piles which are part of newsprint terminal on East River, in lower Manhattan, indicate that end-bearing steel pile may safely sustain design load even though its tip is badly damaged; demonstration also proved importance of reinforcing tips of piles seated on or driven into riprap, boulders or other obstructions.
