Drilling platform, 200× 70 ft, on Ameland Island off Netherlands coast is supported by 188 steel pilings, each driven 59 ft into sand; area is under 3 ft of water or more at high tide; platform was designed to withstand heavy scouring effects on sand, which has characteristics of quicksand; sand pressures around pilings, combined with characteristics of subsoil, made it necessary to sink each piling to 59 ft to support double minimum load; pilings are 9.7 in. and 16 in. in diam.
