The replaceable bases in the roofs of bituminous coal seams
Mar., p. 127: Observations discussed are those recorded in connection with bituminous coal seams of cretaceous age; as high content of replaceable sodium and alkalinity are characteristics of roofs of bituminous coal seams of both carboniferous and cretaceous ages, it seems probable that base exchange between roof and solutions of sodium salts and subsequent hydrolysis of sodium alumino-silicic complex in fresh water are essential factors in conversion of plant remains to bituminous coal. Mar., p. 129: Results of examination; main conclusion to be reached as result of this investigation is that bituminous coal-seam roofs of tertiary age are similar to those of carboniferous and cretaceous ages in their alkalinity and in containing replaceable sodium in excess of replaceable calcium.
