Opening of Tyne bridge
Bridge is of 2-hinge type and has single arch of parabolic form; span from hinge to hinge is 531 ft., while highest point of arch is 180 ft. above pins; roadway is 38 ft. wide, with footways 9 ft. wide on both sides; abutments for arch rest on sandstone rock 75 ft. below quay level; roadway is of wood blocks laid on asphalt which covers steelwork; besides double-car tracks, bridge is designed to carry four lines of traffic.
