Tension in concrete piles during driving
As prestressed piles are subject to tension during driving, resulting horizontal tensile cracks usually appear in upper half of pile; horizontal cracks in long piles may be reduced by increasing prestress or by gentle driving using short hammer strokes until pile point reaches firm resistance, after which full blows may be struck.
