Three designations of tonnage capacity of lock are discussed and defined; method of estimating practical tonnage capacity of lock is presented and example is included; nine factors that govern or influence practical lock capacity are described, and 10 separate steps involved in making capacity estimates are given; relationship between lock use time and delays experienced by tows is developed to use as guide in determining average number of tows per day that can be put through lock; three estimates of practical capacity (maximum, minimum, and probable) demonstrate methods and show effects of selection of different values for factors governed by judgement.
