Conical prestressed concrete tanks for Taf Fechan Water Board
Conical shape was dictated by presence of current or anticipated mining subsidence; base of tank was cast after construction of granular fill cushion and three jacking pads; formwork built of plywood on timber framing, in small panels bolted together to facilitate erection and stripping, was erected to full height of tank and all reinforcement and stressing tendons positioned; vertical prestressing was carried out; horizontal 0.6 in. strand cables were stressed in pairs by four jacks; formwork for domed shell roof was supported on radial trusses; walls are 8-in. thick, and roof is 3-in. average thickness.
