Testing and instrumentation; description of break-away traffic sign base which is fabricated by making right-angled cut across beam, welding plates to adjacent post pieces, and reconnecting pieces by bolting them together; lower piece of post is embedded vertically in concrete foundation; resulting break-away base connection is designed to support moment and shear forces induced at base by wind loads on sign; features of crash testing of sign supports in Texas A and M Research Annex; use of electronic instrumentation and high-speed cameras; results of testing are described.
