Denudation of highwalls near Manchester, Kentucky
Abstract Slope profiles of unreclaimed highwalls (Orphan contour coal mines) abandoned in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s were studied near Manchester, Kentucky, to determine their rate and geometry of denudation. Statistical analysis of these highwall slope profiles reveal that the 1980 highwalls are near vertical, the 1970s have denuded to an average slope angle of approximately 52 degrees, and that the 1960s and 1950s have denuded to the same average slope angle of approximately 41 degrees. Thus, it appears that highwalls left to natural reclamation attain an equilibrium slope profile of 41 degrees in approximately 20 years.
