Weathering of clay minerals in waste dumps of Upper Carboniferous coal-bearing strata, the Ruhr area, West Germany
AbstractWith coal-mining Carboniferous clay-, silt- and sandstones of the Ruhr area (N.W. Germany) are brought to the surface where they are dumped and become subject to weathering. These weathering processes proceed under extreme conditions. Therefore, the newly forming raw-soils have many unique properties not commonly observed in natural soils. This is due to the man-influenced origin of the dumps. In an early saline stage talc is formed as observed in weathering experiments. During a more acidic stage of weathering a transformation of the ‘primary’ clay minerals illite and chlorite into heat sensitive chlorites and smectites takes place. This transformation of clay minerals indicates a typical course of weathering on the mine waste dumps.
