Acidification by pyrite weathering on mine waste stockpiles, Ruhr District, Germany
Abstract Acidification by pyrite weathering is a problem for growth of plants on mine waste stockpiles. Lab studies of the weathering processes of pyrite explored the possibilities of controlling the acidification of the developing soil. Based on these studies experimental field investigations were set up and monitored over a period of five years. It was found that the pH of the soil can be stabilized by adding dolomite and/or fly ash to the mine waste. Experiments and research are continuing.
