Buckling of stepped crane columns
Abstract Despite the proliferation of computer hardware and software, there is still a role for simple hand-calculation methods. This paper is a contribution to that philosophy with respect to the buckling loads of stepped crane columns within rigid frame buildings. Graphs of three factors are presented which enable the design engineer to calculate the buckling load and hence the effective length factors for the more heavily-loaded stepped column. The method is easy to use, is direct without trial and error procedures and is illustrated by numerical example.
