Use of barite concrete for radiation shielding against gamma-rays and neutrons
Highlights Heavyweight concrete containing a local additive was used for radiation shielding. Barite and cut steel bars were used to absorb radiation energy. Cut steel bars can increase the strength and neutron-shielding performance of concrete. Fast neutrons were used in this study to investigate the shielding capability of concrete.
Abstract Demand to use nuclear technology in medicine and research in Thailand is increasing. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to analyze the performance of concrete containing local minerals, barite and cut steel bars in protecting against gamma-ray and fast-neutron radiation. Using barite as fine and coarse aggregates in concrete increases the radiation shielding capability, as well as the strength and density of specimens. Using cut steel bars as an additive material significantly increases the attenuation coefficients of gamma-rays and neutrons.
