Geotextiles used by the German Federal Railway— experiences and specifications
AbstractSince 1973, the German Federal Railway (DB) has used geotextiles, primarily nonwoven fabrics, mainly for the following applications: (i) as a protective base layer for the sealing of railway tunnels; (ii) as a separation layer between fill and low bearing capacity subsoil; (iii) as wrapping to French drains; (iv) as a separator between track bed ballast and subgrade.Experiences gained by DB in these fields of application are described and from these recommendations for design and construction are developed. Knowledge of efficiency and optimum use of geotextiles for the fields of application described is not yet sufficiently developed, despite more than ten years of endeavour. Now, as ever, the market is rather unclear since the development of testing methods for geotextiles is not as yet concluded. The parallel approaches of gathering experiences and evaluating publications must be our resource in this matter.
