Bluff body aerodynamics in pulsating flow
AbstractThe effect of pulsating flow superposed upon a mean flow on the side surface pressure fluctuations of two-dimensional (2-D) rectangular cylinders with slenderness ratios (width/height ratio, B/D) ranging from 0.5 to 20 has been studied. The purpose of this study was to understand the mechanism of interaction between external flow pulsations and vortex-induced oscillations of the body and examine the connection between these flow-induced oscillations and the enhancement of shear layer instability. It is shown that the pressure distributions necessary for vortex-induced torsional and heaving oscillations of bluff bodies with slenderness ratios between approximately B/D = 2 and B/D = 10 result from the enhancement of shear layer instability due to the external flow pulsations.
