The stability of some currently used wave parameters
Abstract The applicability of various wave parameters deduced from the moments of the wave-energy spectrum is discussed. The parameters considered describe the spectral shape, energy content and average period. The stability of these, i.e. their dependency on the choice of the high-frequency cut-off when the moments are computed, is considered by means of numerically integrating the JONSWAP spectrum equation. The spectral width parameter and average wave-period parameters are, among others, found to be unstable for typical sine-wave spectra.
