The stability of some currently used wave parameters
Abstract Statistical parameters describing the energy content, average period and shape of a wave energy spectrum may be obtained from the moments of the spectrum. The spectral moments and, hence, the statistical parameters are sensitive to the cut-off frequency of the spectrum. For an actual ocean wave energy density spectrum, they are also highly dependent on the frequency resolution of the calculated spectrum. Except for the total energy content, these parameters are found to be unstable for different degrees of freedom (or, alternately, the degrees of resolution).
