On the soil and its constructional properties at the Saimaa canal construction in Finland
Abstract This paper has, in short, dealt with the present construction work of the Saimaa canal in southeastern Finland, the soil at the building site and the earth structures in connection with this work. The structures, the canal excavations and rock cuts have been inspected, and when discovering the reasons for the landslides occurring in connection with these cuts, the anisotropy of the clay in question has become apparent. In addition to the earth excavations, the slope protection has also been examined in brief and observations on the use of varved glacial clay in earth dams have been submitted.
