Emergence of an urban region
A case study of the central coastal region in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia
AbstractFollowing the discovery of oil in commercial quantities in 1937, the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia rapidly became established as the most important of the Kingdom's provinces in economic terms. As a consequence of the extraction (and, more recently, the processing) of oil, the social, economic and settlement structures of the province have undergone radical transformation. Since 1975 the pattern of economic and urban development which has occurred suggests that a new urban region is emerging in the Central Coastal Region of the province, stretching from Al-Khobar in the south to the new Jubail Industrial City in the north. This paper traces the historical development of the region, outlines its physical characteristics and describes its population and settlement structures. It reviews the expected growth trends in population and employment and analyses the consequences of these trends for the urban structure of the region.
