Nutritional contribution of cattle dung in wastelage feeding to buffalo
AbstractSilage prepared from wheat straw, green berseem and molasses in the ratio of 45:17:10 and wastelage made of these ingredients in the same ratio plus 17 parts cattle dung had good silage characteristics. Mean dry matter intake was 1·8 and 1·9 kg per 100 kg body weight from silage and wastelage respectively in male buffalo calves of 240 and 225 kg mean body weight. The nitrogen content of the dung was 2·9% on dry matter basis which marginally increased the nitrogen content of wastelage in comparison to silage. The mean digestibilities of various organic nutrients in both the groups were similar. The digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, ether extract, acid detergent fibre and total carbohydrate of cattle dung calculated by difference was 43·9, 48·1, 57·9, 79·1, 31·6 and 42·0%, respectively. The mean DCP (%) and TDN (%) in silage, wastelage and cattle dung were 5·6 and 42·6, 6·6 and 43·0, and 10·4 and 43·1%, respectively, on dry matter basis. The mean DCP intake was higher than the maintenance requirement but TDN intake was equal to the NRC standards.
