Design of prefabricated wall-floor building systems using meta-heuristic optimization algorithms
Abstract This paper proposes a method for the optimum design of a new industrialized precast ‘Wall-Floor’ building system using the Artificial Intelligence (AI), in which collaboration between the Engineer and the Architect concludes to the optimum wall configurations. The method provides an easy application of AI to precast construction industry. Conventionally, structural systems do not involve the application of AI to the overall process of construction of prefabricated structural parts despite its gained efficiency in the entire design and construction stages. MATLAB and the Finite Element software together with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm provide the means for design, analysis and optimization of an illustrative example house having a rectangular plan. The example, under free and irregular wall arrangements, aims at achieving the optimal beam layout together with their connections. It is verified that, the proposed technique can optimize the structural performance as well as satisfying the architectural parameters and allowing easy fabrication process with minimum efforts.
