Turbulence measurements on top of a steep hill
Abstract This paper presents preliminary results of an experimental study conducted at the summit of a hill surrounded by complex terrain. The objective of the experiment has been to increase the understanding of the characteristics of the wind fiel field over hilly complex terrain for use in wind energy applications. Measurements for different wind directions withina 20° sector, obtained under high wind conditions including power spectra, and integral length scales of turbulence are presented. Comparison to the Kaimal spectra shows strong deviations with increased v-components and decreased w-component levels, flattening and shift to higher frequencies. Procounced differences are seen to exist among the spectra from different wind directions, reflecting changes in the wind structure due to the terrain configuration. Integral length scales, calculated via the “correlation integral” technique for a maximum time lag exhibit a similar dependence on the configuration of the terrain.
