This image display system for a work machine is provided with: an imaging device which is attached to the work machine provided with a work device having a work tool; an attitude detection device which detects the attitude of the work device; a distance detection device which calculates information about the distance from the work machine to the work target; and a processing device which uses information about the position of the work tool obtained using the attitude of the work device and information about the position of the work target obtained from the information about the distance calculated by the distance detection device to generate an image of an area, corresponding to the work tool, on the work target opposite of the work tool, synthesizes this image with an image of the work target imaged by the imaging device and displays this on a display device.
