Abstract (Fig. 2) A method and system for constructing a layer of ballast in a railway track to overlie sub-ballast is disclosed. The ballast (4) underlies railway sleepers (1) and railway tracks (2) lying on the railway sleepers. The ballast includes shoulder ballast (3') located laterally adjacent to the ballast underlying the sleepers and tracks. The method comprises arranging a segment (7) of a tyre in relation to the sub-ballast (5) of the railway track such that the tyre segment is able to locate at the shoulder ballast. The method also comprises locating shoulder ballast material over the sub ballast.
