The present invention relates generally to pile-based footings of the type used to secure an upright element to the ground. The footings may be used to support a building stump, fence post or a lighting pole for example. More particularly, the invention is directed to pile-based footings which are usable for a range of upright elements. In one embodiment, the invention provides an apparatus for engaging an upright element, the apparatus comprising: an engaging portion having an open region configured to accept an upright element engaged by the apparatus from a generally lateral direction and make contact therewith, and one or more pile guides associated with the engaging portion, the pile guides configured to guide a pile generally downwardly into an underlying substrate. 90 $ 75
