Abstract (fig 2) A wheelchair gate access mechanism 10 for moving a gate latch from a gate engaged state to a gate disengaged state. To do this the person positions the wheelchair so that they are able to reach and grasp the handle 20 of the wheelchair gate access mechanism 10. They then move the handle 20 in an upwards direction which in turn causes the inner elongate member 12 to move upwards within the outer elongate member 11. The resultant movement of the inner elongate member upwards causes the engaging member 30 to move upwards which in turn cause the pull knob 51 of the vertical pull-up gate latch 50 move upwards. The handle 20 is moved upwards a distance equal to the height of the opening 113 such that the inner elongate member and the engaging member 30 move the same distance vertically so as to move the pull knob 51 vertically to release the vertical pull-up gate latch 50 from the latch portion of the gate in order open the gate. The wheelchair gate access mechanism 10 is now in the gate disengaged state. The person then releases the handle 20 and enters through the gate. Upon release of the handle 20 the handle 20, the inner elongate member 12 and engaging member 30 move downwards under the action of gravity so that the wheelchair gate access mechanism 10 returns to the gate engaging state to retain the gate in a closed position when the gate is closed. 10-1 50 N\,,
