The invention relates to technical field of coatings, and particularly relates to a preparation method of an exterior wall coating of magnesium oxychloride cement. The method comprises the following steps: stirring and mixing caustic dolomite dust, coal ashes or silica fume, straws or sawdust and a sand mixture evenly at the mass ratio of 100 to (5-20) to (10-50) to (10-70), so as to form a backing material; adding 20-25 parts by weight of magnesium chloride water to the backing material; and stirring evenly to form the coating coated on an exterior wall, wherein the mass ratio of the caustic dolomite dust to the magnesium chloride water is 1 to (1-2.1).The exterior wall coating disclosed by the invention is good in fireproof performance, good in cold tolerance, simple in process, convenient to construct and operate, low in cost, and very suitable for popularization and application in the northwest region, and also has a certain heat preservation effect.
