The invention discloses a method for preparing a polycarboxylate-type water reducing agent for silica-fume-containing unshaped refractory. Deionized water, MPEG 200-400, sodium allyl methyl sulphonate and a chain transfer agent are heated, then a chain transfer agent water solution and an initiating agent water solution are added dropwise, alkali liquor is added after a reaction is conducted, the PH value is adjusted to range from 7 to 8, polycarboxylate-type water reducing agent mother liquor is obtained, and a powder product is obtained after mist spraying and drying is conducted. Compared with the prior art, the prepared polycarboxylate-type water reducing agent can be used for silica-fume-containing unshaped refractory, and the prepared polycarboxylate-type water reducing agent has the advantages that the water reducing agent is good in dispersing effect, high in wetting speed, high in water-reducing rate and free of water bleeding, the high-temperature performance is improved, and strength is enhanced.
