Provided is a heat insulating material of high strength and exceptional heat insulating properties. The present invention relates to a heat insulating material (10) formed from a plurality of aerogel particles (1) which are bonded with an adhesive (2). The surfaces of the aerogel particles (1) are hydrophobic. The surfaces of the aerogel particles (1) are treated with a surfactant. The adhesive (2) is formed in such a way as to include branching structural sections that span the surfaces of at least three aerogel particles.
