The invention discloses a concrete retarder and a preparation method thereof. The concrete retarder comprises, by weight, 200 to 250 parts of sweet potato dry powder, 100 to 120 parts of calcium carbonate, 90 to 100 parts of sulfuric acid and 65 to 75 parts of hydrochloric acid. The concrete retarder further comprises, by weight, 228 parts of the sweet potato dry powder, 104 parts of the calcium carbonate, 96 parts of the sulfuric acid and 70 parts of the hydrochloric acid. The provided concrete retarder has the advantages that the setting time of the concrete can be suspended, the cement hydration exothermic process is delayed, and conducting large-volume construction of the concrete at summer is facilitated.
