Sintered zirconia compact, and zirconia composition and calcined compact
Reduced grain sizes are calculated in a cross-sectional photograph of a sintered zirconia compact on the basis of the cross-sectional surface area of zirconia particles and on the assumption that the zirconia particles have a circular cross-sectional shape; the zirconia particles are divided on the basis of the reduced grain sizes into a class of particles measuring less than 0.4 mu m, a class of particles measuring from 0.4 mu m to less than 0.76 mu m, and a class of particles measuring 0.76 mu m or greater; and the cross-sectional surface area ratio of each of the classes of particles is calculated in relation to the total cross-sectional surface area of all the zirconia particles for which the cross-sectional surface areas have been calculated in each of the classes, whereupon the cross-sectional surface area ratio of zirconia particles having reduced grain sizes of less than 0.4 mu m is 4-35%, the cross-sectional surface area ratio of zirconia particles having reduced grain sizes of 0.4 mu m to less than 0.76 mu m is 24-57%, and the cross-sectional surface area ratio of zirconia particles having reduced grain sizes of 0.76 mu m and greater is 16-62%.
