The invention relates to a buckling restrained brace for seismic strengthening of buildings and method using the buckling restrained brace. The buckling restrained brace is composed of a core steel structural brace, an internal filling restraining material and an outer steel pipe; space between the core steel structural brace and the outer steel pipe is filled with the internal filling restraining material; the internal filling restraining material forms a slip face or a non-adhesive layer between the core steel structural brace and the outer steel pipe, allowing the core steel structural brace to bear axial outer load; the internal filling restraining material and the outer steel pipe prevent overall flexural rigidity of the core steel structural brace. The buckling restrained brace is effective in improving seismic performances of structures and evidently improving seismic bearing capacity of the structures. Moreover, the buckling restrained brace is small in size, needs little reinforcement and reformation quantities, is lower in engineering manufacturing cost and has little influence on application functions of the inside of a building, structural rigidity can also be improved, structural rigidity distribution is more reasonable, and the buckling restrained brace is especially applicable to use in earthquake-prone areas.
